Today we're going to be taking a look at star wars republic commando on the switch a game that i've wanted to see on the console for some time now. But was it worth the wait? For what i would consider to be a classic star wars game or was this one just best left in the past? Well, i'll give you a heads up like now.
This one has a serious issue that is for sure i hate to say though. Your leading delta squad also known as boss fixer scotch and seven elite squadron of republic commandos. We find ourselves here at the height of the clone wars and it's your mission to take this squad infiltrate locations while taking down any enemy that may enter your sights.
The game story is solid throughout and it stands up to this day with
you. Basically heading on these essential missions whether that's you know
aboard enemy spacecraft's production facilities or even helping out wookies on
their home planet. It's not exactly deep stuff honestly. But what always
carried it for me was the dialogue between command and your team and that
remains like a solid and strong as ever.
Capturing the tone of star wars while also adding its own personality. So gameplay in republic commando is a squad based first person shooter meaning. Yes, there's a whole lot of you know running and gunning. But also some basic commands that direct your squad on what to do next the core gameplay though.

It's nothing you haven't seen before, you know run, jump, crouch, shoot, reload. A variety of weapons to kind of use, melee secondary weapon, safety grenades, and then you can switch visor modes as well. So think something like night vision the game has a number of control layouts as well that can be accessed from the main menu.
So you should be able to find something that you know fits your personal taste and comfort republic commando then reinforces this traditional you know control setup first person shooter though with squad commands.
Star Wars Republic Commando is all built around a single button. That is the a button all you need to do point out an activity point or object the symbol. Actually appears on your screen and the game will actually automatically choose a squad mate.
Implement the action whether that's you know take cover mandatory to revive a fallen teammate, heal themselves, set an explosive. You know the list kind of goes on there's.
Actually quite a lot in here for your team to help you out with. It's very simplistic. But it sets the game apart from most in this genre and the single button implementation has always worked surprisingly well. The game's all about epic set pieces and commanding your squad through them just adds a whole level of intensity now, if you are thinking. But i don't want that responsibility. You can survive most the game without using it except for maybe a few key moments.

But you would probably be passing up there on one of the game's best aspects also these squad mates. They can revive you when you fall in battle and just know this is very much a game.
Its time meaning if you do die that last checkpoint, it can be quite a distance away. So i would say make use of them they do also have solid ai. Throughout. So make the most of them to kind of back you up in battle as well really. The rest of this one comes down to then extremely linear levels while it is old-school. It's the same mostly corridors pathways that good stuff i still had a blast with it.
It's the gun play though it just feels extremely like fiscal still the weapons are powerful the rifle you start with the game with as well it quickly unfolds your attachments. You can get like a sniper, a shotgun, a grenade launcher.
The game just has this great sense of forward progression for you and your squad on the game has this like impeccable timing when it comes to giving you something new to play with and enemies to like defeat.
I'm sure the enemies they are repetitive. But you know for a large part
it is clone base that absolutely makes sense. But who doesn't like taking out
tin cans. Honestly as well this is one of the few games where they are not just
father to mow down. But they really are genuine threats, so when it comes to
issues this port.
It's just bare bones as ports go. Honestly a resolution bump and that's really about it, no real noticeable improvement or quality of life tricks up. Its slave, they stripped out multiplayer leaving you with the eight or so hour campaign and that is it there's no gyro support here. The texture work is still very much the same from like 16 years ago.
There's just a lot of missed opportunity here. Basically you know we've seen some re-releases recently take full advantage of the nintendo switch and it definitely pays off the real problem with this one though. It's frame rate and full unfreezes. From the ferry opening moments for public commando is a bit of a disaster and a frame rate front in duct mode this is a 16 year old xbox game.

At this point there is no reason we should be facing challenges. I came in actually personally expecting a locked out 60. Honestly you'll be lucky here to stick to that 30 frames per second when doing kind of like an empty location. You'll be right around that 30 to 30 free mark. Don't get me wrong. But once enemies come on screen, nine times out of ten.
This thing is going to tank to right around 20 to 23 frames per second and hold there and relatively frequently as well it will go sub 20. I hit as low as 16. Personally if you are gonna play this one the short test, i did it seems handout is a whole lot better i spent about 15 minutes there. There were no frame freezes and no huge drops. It's really disappointing i mean impacts everything to do with the game players.
Once you know reactive guns and firefights turn into these kind of sluggish and unresponsive affairs rendering many of the battles. A whole lot more difficult than they really need to be from on top of this then Fulham freezes on the screen.
You're gonna see plenty of them for this article. Today you know i expect these at maybe save points. But again relatively frequently and a few times they were so long i actually feared the game was about to crash.
Star Wars Republic Commando super disappointing, honestly and i hope apache is in the works to get this all fixed up as soon as possible. Because republic commando it just deserves a whole lot more love than this. So graphically and honestly look i think. It's fine it's an old game show. It's definitely showing that age.
But i always thought it was a good looking game and that stands to this day. You know it's definitely not up to today's standards. But it's not too far off for me though we get a nice variety of locations the worlds are interesting the weapons look great and enemies from simple clones through things like tanks of an absolute highlight the squad in particular then as well moving around you following orders.

There's something i've always enjoyed about their animations and kind of reflection of the scenario you know like think they've got an injury that also stands to this day. If i was gonna improve anything here some low detail textures and the enemies when they're kind of receiving fire you know when you're shooting at them.
They can be a little unresponsive in that animations. It can be a
little tough to figure out if you are hitting them otherwise though look it
looks like a star wars game and a gritty one of that and i think that's what
always made this one stand out toward you then and again with great stuff the
main menu music is part of my teens honestly.
It still sends a shiver down my spine, it's epic. It screams just star wars, but it also reinforces what you're about to face is unlike any star wars experience you've played before. The face work then your squad mates command all good work and the weapons. They sound absolutely like epic and enemies they're all obviously directly from the movie.
So you know you're getting some top quality work ahead of you. No real complaints honestly on an audio front, it's just as strong as ever be the only area lacking the environmental effects. They can be a little fin at times given some of these huge environments and like locations we are in.
So the final verdict and again like i love the game but this is just a lackluster port that is failing to deliver what we need from a first-person shooter duct and that is a decent frame rate seeing some nice scores for this switch build drop already.
I had to get this article out there, because you can't overlook frame freezes and a tanking frame rate as well there's just no excuse for it. Because i didn't beat the game. I just kind of wanted to get this article out there. So you could see its current state. But in that current state it's definitely below average and as ports go. It's definitely below the bare minimum you know if you're gonna be facing this.

You cannot do it duct if you must play Star Wars Republic Commando , it play handheld where it is a whole lot closer to what i would have personally expected from the performance for me though. Personally this game it just deserves to be on a big screen without volume jacked all the way up now. I hope they do patch it very quickly.
But just be wary with your cash right now. Because i think a lot of
nostalgia and just a lot of star wars in general i have it myself is kind of
gonna get in the way of this game receiving some high scores. He probably
didn't deserve, i was sitting there trying to make excuses myself. But i can
confidently tell you this is not the port of star wars republic commando we
were looking for now.
Will you be adding this one to the collection or skipping? Given its current issues i'll be keeping a close eye on it though watching out for that patch. Hopefully i can report back here soon with good news and also a must by recommendation from me.
Because this is a piece of star wars history that deserves the very best of ports. I'll see you all on the next article thanks everyone.
