I am not really a fan of fighting games in general. But every now and again, i run across a game that can pique my interest even if it is for just a short time and that can be said for mortal kombat 11 on the switch at least somewhat.
So about a few weeks ago, i was on the nintendo eshop and saw mortal kombat 11 the standard edition was on sale for 14.99 US. I figured hey, it's another switch game that's a relatively cheap game. So i purchased it and figured.
I'll give it a go after rolling the end credits of the storyline and investing some time into the game. I thought what could be more of a perfect time than now to do a review and ask the real question what's it worth in 2021 ?

Graphic
This is another one of those cases where the game will look better on the consoles and pc rather than the switch. The crypt, an area where you will spend your in-game currency on consumables gear cosmetics and character customization items has lots of graphical stuttering and what appears to be frame rate dips as well as some muddy textures.
It kind of looks like late ps2 early, ps3, xbox 360
graphics. However since this part of the game is really only to unlock items.
It's really doesn't matter what it looks like.
I guess as for the graphics during the gameplay portions. There is some strange glitchiness with the players or fighters hair and around their eyes.
I noticed this mostly in the storyline also the fighter's resolution is lower than i had hoped as well as.
Some artifacting going on this game has been out for almost two years. So it is likely not going to have any graphical patches and i do want to mention that once the fight starts you really don't notice that much that.
There is an issue and it really isn't game breaking by any means. The backgrounds and stages and or stages does have some muddy textures and is blurry at times. But again once the fight starts, it's really not that noticeable. The cinematic cutscenes within the story looks amazing.
Even though there's some very slight occasional frame rate stutters and when the fight sequences start. There is kind of a rough transition from the cinematic portion to the gameplay. This can be a little bit off-putting. The game plays just fine in both docked and undocked.

Frame Rates
For the most part during gameplay, the frame rates stay around 60 frames per second. The gameplay Mortal Kombat 11 is very good in regards to the fighting portions of the game. There isn't anything in the way of slow down being docked or undocked and the fights are fun.
They're fast and they're very smooth combos are a blast to chain together and i love the final blow mechanic where you can push the zr and zl button when you are in your last bit of health to get a powerful combo to get back into the fight. I am awful at fighting games.
However i did play the medium difficulty and it was just hard enough to keep me interested in the game. The game has various amounts of difficulty for newcomers or veterans of the series. If you're looking for an easier or harder difficulty the moves were relatively easy for me to learn.
The only exception to that was the fatalities which i was never able to successfully get one to work. I did see though that there is a tutorial area for fatality specifically. If you'd like, you can go there and get practice with them. All in all the gameplay is great even with the graphical drawbacks.

Story
The story is definitely my favorite part of this game. I honestly figured it would just be a cheesy couple of hours and a story that tried too hard to get into fight sequences.
But i was pleasantly surprised it is an engrossing tale of good vs evil and had me wanting to find time to jump back into the story to see what happens next.
Even though, i have not played a mortal kombat story in recent memory. This story does a good job at trying to fill in the missing details to at least give you an idea of why things are happening in the plot.
So if you're wondering if you needed to play past games to
understand what is going on you should be able to get by with the back telling
within the story.
I will try not to spoil anything in regards to the story while trying to give a summary.
The best i can the summary of the story is a powerful villain that can control time and goes by the name of Kronika, decides she is going to defeat raiden who keeps foiling evil's plans by killing shinnok to do this. She causes the past and current timelines to collide in doing.
So she brings back fighters who have died as well as past counterparts of current fighters presented in the story.
Kronika believes by resurrecting past fighters such as shao khan among other fighters. She will be able to change the outcome of the present and defeat raiden for evil to prevail.
This causes raiden to review past mistakes and try to correct them while teaming with allies to ultimately defeat Kronika. The story has a lot of comical events heroic actions and even some tragedy that just makes it feel like a well-rounded experience.
The story took me approximately five and a half hours and i enjoyed every single minute of it.

Game Mode
Let's talk game modes. As for the game modes there is the towers of time which allows you to play and defeat enemies while working up the tower and trying to defeat them in a race against time which resets weakly. The faster you defeat the fighters, the higher you place and the more in-game currency and items you unlock.
There's also classic towers if you are just looking to play towers like the old school mortal kombat games, of course there is the story which i had just gone over. There is multiplayer which i will be going over in just a few moments. Lastly there is a ton of tutorials for those who are needing a refresher or are new to the mortal kombat gameplay.

Multiplayer
At first i thought the multiplayer in this Mortal Kombat 11 was dead. The first time i accessed the multiplayer i was waiting between 5 and 10 minutes and then researching thinking i was doing something wrong.
I did not seem to be
able to find anyone online to play against in that time frame.
I did this a few times in both ranked and casual and still wasn't able to get a match.
I tried again a few days later and was able to match making both ranked and in casual and it took approximately 4-8 minutes to find a match as far as connection goes.
I did not experience any lag except right at the end of the fight when there is the animation for victory.
There was a slight frame rate dip, i can't say for certain. I am awful at mortal kombat as i lost every multiplayer game i played. The only thing i can say is bad about the multiplayer is that some players.
I encountered spam certain moves over and over and it was really difficult for a novice like me to figure out how to counter them. Either way the multiplayer is okay and there is still some active players.

Replayability
This game has tons of unlockables practically the whole
reason for the crypt is to collect coins and other currency to spend on chests
to unlock items and gear.
This will be a draw for some others like me will likely spend whatever currency they have from playing the story and the time.
They spend in the towers and then never return there again. There is really only three reasons to return to mortal kombat 11 without.
Of course paying extra money for dlc one would be for multiplayer. Either to rank up or to just play multiplayer for a fighting game.
The other would be keeping the time best time in the towers of time and playing the game on a higher difficulty for some. This will give them lots of enjoyment and others not so much drawbacks.

Conclusion
Last thing i want to mention about this game is my complaints or the drawbacks. The game graphically does not look the best. There are fighters locked behind paywalls at the time that i bought mk11 the dlc for the story was on sale for forty dollars.
After some research i see that it is about three hours long.
I'm not against dlc when it comes to an add-on to a complete game.
Whether it's for the story or some kind of decent addition. I understand that that the developers need to be paid.
However fighters locked behind a paywall in a fighting game is just a cash grab.
In my opinion, is just wrong so what's it worth with the game launching in april of 2019. It's good, but rather short five and a half hour story, the graphics not being the best and some graphical hitches.
The multiplayer does have active players and a ranked system for those who want to climb the leaderboards. The game also does have some replayability value in unlocking skins items and gear with that said.
This game is a good value at twenty dollars and i think that most gamers would be happy with the amount of content in mortal kombat 11 for that price.
